Gujarat Earthquake : A powerful earthquake, with its epicentre in Bhuj, shook Gujarat on January 26, 2001.It is estimated that five towns-Bhuj, Bhachao, Anjar, Rapar and Gandhidham and about 400 villages will require a helping hand.
1999 The Kargil Conflict : In the most recent conflagration between India and Pakistan, India lost about 400 armed force personnel while wresting back strategic peaks that Pakistan-backed force had occupied. The war, lasted for 50 days, ended on June 26, 1999.
Orissa Cyclone :The cyclone that struck Orissa on October 29, 1999, was perhaps the century's worst calamity. More than 10,000 people died, lakhs were rendered homeless and survivors had to wade through corpses and animal carcasses to reach make shift camps.

Jayabala Ashar : Jayabala Ashar, a young collegian, was pushed out of a train by a drug addict when she refused to part with her purse. She lost her legs in the accident.
Gujarat Cyclone :The cyclone which struck the Gujarat coast on June 9, 1998, left 1,040 dead. It also severely damaged IAF installations, Kandla port and Corporate Gujarat. Shockingly, there was no prior warning issued about the cyclone.
1993 Bombay Riots :'Cosmopolitan' Mumbai burned on December 6, 1992, after religious fundamentalists demolished the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya. About 200 people lost their lives. But more was to come-A second round of riots broke out on January 6, 1993, and claimed over 300 lives.
Latur Earthquake :Darkness descended at dawn in Latur and Osmanabad districts of Maharashtra on September 30, 1993, when a powerful quake killed about 12,000 people and flattened over 30 villages to ground. Unofficial figures put the toll at 35,000.
1988 Bihar Earthquake :About 850 people lost their lives in the quake that struck Bihar on August 21, 1988. Adding to the tragedy of the moment was the fact that a steamer carrying 400 people had capsized in the Ganga barely a fortnight ago.
1979 Andhra Pradesh Cyclone :The second cyclone in as many years. People living in villages of Andhra Pradesh suffered the most, even as 500 died and over 15,000 were rendered homeless.
Morvi Floods : The Morvi-Malia belt of Gujarat was the worst-hit in the floods that ravaged western India in 1979. Over 1,200 people lost thier lives in the Morvi region alone.
1978 Yamuna Floods :A feisty Yamuna cut off North India from the rest of the country. The magnitude of the floods and losses incurred can be judged from the fact that almost all the states - Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar and Punjab were affected.
1977 Andhra Pradesh Cyclone :One of the worst-ever cyclonic storms to hit Indian shores. Six-metre-high tidal waves swept across the villages of Andhra Pradesh, killing over 20,000 people, and wiping out over 100 villages.
1975 Patna Floods :Patna turned into an island for a few days in August 1975 when unprecedented floods submerged more than half the city. This was the result of both the Sone and the Ganga rivers flowing in high spate through the streets of the Bihar capital.
1968   Gujarat Floods :Each and every district of Gujarat was affected by the floods which swept through the state in 1968. Surat suffered the worst damages - 100 people died and nearly 70,000 head of cattle perished.
1967 Koyna Earthquake :The quake that shook Koyna on a quiet December evening in 1967 will remain etched in the collective memory of the people of Maharashtra because, to date it remains one of the most powerful quakes to rock the state.
1962 Indo-China War :In October, 1962, when Chinese incursion into Indian territory became apparent, India proclaimed a state of emergency to prepare to take on the enemy. But the Indian soldiers' progress was hampered by lack of warm clothing and difficulty to acclimatise to the cold ranges where the battles were raging.
1961 Poona Floods :On July 12, 1961, over half of Poona was submerged by the Mutha waters. About 59 persons were missing and 50,000 flood-stricken people needed immediate relief, but the most worrying aspect of the floods were the cracks which had developed in the state's two important dams - at Panshet and Khadakvasla.
1958 Bombay Fire :A fire in a saw mill spread to the adjoining oil mill, resulting in an inferno. Homes of about 350 families were reduced to shells when the fire kept gathering momentum in Bombay's congested Pydhonie locality.
1956 Anjar Earthquake :Anjar, an industrial township of barely 20,000 in Gujarat, was destroyed by an earthquake on a quiet evening. About 115 people died, over 3,000 houses in 25 villages developed huge cracks.
1955 Bihar & Punjab Floods : Rivers in full spate wreaked havoc in states in the North and in the East. Punjab, PEPSU and Bihar bore the brunt of the floods in 1955.
1954 Bihar & Assam Floods :With 20 rivers rushing down the Himalayas in full spate, Bihar just did not have a chance in August 1954. The state registered heavy losses due to the ensuing floods. Assam fared no better.
1947 Ramdas Ship Disaster   : The 406-ton Ramdas sank ten miles off Bombay on July 17, 1947, killing over 600 people aboard it. The wreckage was found ten years later near Ballard Pier.
1940 Bombay Cyclone :A cyclone struck the coast of Bombay in an unlikely month of October, 1940. It caught the fisherfolk unawares. About 100 people, mainly seamen, lost their lives. The coast of Bombay, from Colaba to Malabar and Colaba to Sewari, witnessed heavy devastation.
