descended at dawn in Latur and Osmanabad districts of Maharashtra on September
30, 1993, when a powerful quake killed about 12,000 people and flattened
over 30 villages to ground. Unofficial figures put the toll at 35,000.

July 12, 1961, over half of Poona was submerged by the Mutha waters. About
59 persons were missing and 50,000 flood-stricken people needed immediate
relief, but the most worrying aspect of the floods were the cracks which
